Eid Al Adha- Generative Value

On the 24th September 2015, my mum prepared biryani for dinner, is it a coincidence? The 24th September 2015 marked the beginning of Eid and on this precise day, mostly all Muslims will prepare biryani with the lamb or goat sacrificed. The article that I find on Teen Vogue (http://www.teenvogue.com/story/eid-al-adha-islamic-holiday-facts) talks about the “eight things you should know about Islam’s Biggest Holiday of the Year”.

This article of Sarah Harvard particularly interests me firstly as it is about a recent celebration, of only one day gap from the date of the celebration and publication of the article and the day I read the article. Moreover as a sub title, it is written “Eid al-Adha is kind of like a Muslim Christmas.” Christmas is representative of family festival. It is one of the specific date on which all the family members are all gathered. This sub title captured my attention even though it is not really accurate after proof reading.

The first point listed is about the greeting and the meaning of some words. Living in a multicultural country it is useful and enriching to know more about other cultures and especially when having Muslim ancestors. Eager to learn more about the cultural aspects behind the festival, the second and third point explain the history behind and the sacrifice done on this occasion. It also highlights the aspect of sharing which I really appreciate. It shows that we care for others. This celebration encourages believers to share some moment and food with their family circle, friends and with less fortunate one.

As an animal lover but also as someone who accepts other religions and cultures, I am a bit reluctant to this sacrifice. Reading this article which addresses als

o this point of killing, I have been more lightened as the author detailed the process by which it is done and clearly explain the reasons behind.

She also explains that believers perform pilgrimage to Hajj to ask God for forgiveness and to be washed away from all sins. Furthermore I learned that the celebration is four days long and on the first day even most Muslims prepare biryani, the food may vary from different countries but it is essential that lamb or goat is the main ingredient. The aspect of being in family for the meal is highlighted and the author puts emphasis on the fact that there is abundance of food on that day.

I learned a lot from this article not only the traditions but also their meanings, the family connection, the importance of sharing and sacrifice behind this feast. Through this article I have learned more about the religion, reflecting on how I could have lived if my family did follow this religion and the way of living during the celebration and fast. I have seen some connection through the fact they have strong family link.
